JR pass, FOR CHEAPER TRAIN TRAVEL

The JR Pass is the ideal travel solution and the best way to discover Japan by train.
Economical and simple to use, the JR Pass gives you access to the JR network nationwide and is a lot cheaper than buying individual train tickets.

Get the maximum out of your JR Pass: for the price of a return ticket Tokyo-Kyoto, visit the rest of Japan free for 7 days!

what are the advantages of a green pass?

The 'Green Pass' entitles you to travel in the 'Green Car', the equivalent of our 1st class, on all valid Shinkansen (so except Nozomi and Mizuho) and certain fast lines.

The Green Japan Rail Pass is not often used by foreign travellers but, considering the comfort it offers, the space, the hot towel (oshibori) and even free drinks you receive on some routes, it is good value for money.

Buying the Green Japan Rail Pass is a good idea if you are planning on travelling during busy times (May, August and September) because, in addition to the fact that there is more space allocated to each traveller, the Green cars are generally less busy giving you more of a chance of reserving a seat.

Who is eligible for the Japan Rail Pass?

To use the Japan Rail Pass it is necessary to:
  • be a non-Japanese national
  • enter Japan with the status ‘Temporary Visitor ‘ which is an authorisation for people visiting Japan for tourism and staying for less than 90 days
  • be visiting for a touristic stay.
Therefore, the following people are not eligible to use the Japan Rail Pass:
Please note that some visas obtained for special activities other than tourism, even of short duration, do not meet eligibility criteria.

For more information, please read our Common Questions section.

It was for the most part very practical.\n\nOne issue: The site said that it would be useful for "some transportation within the city", but it was not clear which ones. I think it was mainly the Yamanote line, and it would be helpful to be more clear about that.

Took multiple 2 hr. train rides, plus used for Kochi City street cars, so a good value. Also very convenient, as we did not really speak or read any ***. No worries about buying correct ticket or paying correct fare. Info how to identify reserved cars would have saved us embarrassment, though.
